Northwest heirloom . This round, slate-gray squash, which weighs 10-15lbs, is prized for its exceptional preserving qualities and unparalleled rich, sweet flavour. Makes the best pumpkin pie on Earth! Produces quick growing, thick, 12″–18″ tall, 6–10′ long vines. Trichomes, which are tiny hairs, are seen on the leaves and vines. The trumpet-shaped flowers are yellow-orange.
Companion plants: Corn, Pumpkin, Cucumber, Melon, Beans, Peas, Beets, Sunflower, Parsley, Celery.
Far from: Tomato, Eggplant, Potato, Pepper.
Planting tip: Plant directly outside in late May or early June when soil temperature has reached 25°C. It can be started indoors as well, sow 2-3 weeks before the frost. Ready to transplant outside when soil temperature has reached 25°C.
Harvesting tip: Fruit is mature when it has a rich colour and hard rinds that are hard to dent with a fingernail. Another indicator is ground spot getting riper in colour from yellow to cream, gold to orange. Cut 2” stem to avoid rotting from the broken stem. Must cure in dry and warm conditions.
Storage tip: Store at 10-12°C with 55-75% humidity with good air circulation.
