Amish variety valued for its ruggedness and heavy production. Thick compact plant great for a cut-and-come-again lettuce. Sharply triangular green leaves with straight edges. Unique growth habit. Thin midrib, good texture. Pleasant, sharp flavor. Loose-leaf lettuce.
Companion plants: Onion, Radish, Broccoli, Beans, Beet, Nasturtium, Dill, Corn, Cucumber, Cilantro, Strawberries.
Far from: Cabbage, Brussel Sprouts, Celery, Parsley.
Planting tip: Sow seed directly outside as soon as the soil can be worked. One can also start plant indoors 3-4 weeks ahead of planting time. Most lettuce won't germinate well above 25°C except a few heat-tolerant varieties.
Harvesting tip: Harvest at any stage but flavour is best in fall after a few cold nights.
Storage tip: Can be stored in sand in a root cellar at about 1-2°C.
