Grow anise in direct sunlight. Anise should be planted in a protected area away from the wind. Herb from the Mediterranean region with licorice-like flavour. The plant develops into a bushy decorative herb and is lovely with its lacy leaves and plenty of white blossoms. Anise needs soil that is generally alkaline. Many types of moths and butterflies, such as the wormwood pug and black swallowtails, eat it for sustenance. The seeds have been used and are still used as a digestive aid by people all over the world because they are believed to reduce stomach discomfort and prevent gas.
Planting tip:Direct sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and space them 1 inch apart when spring soil temperatures are above 15°C. If planting in multiple rows set the rows 2 to 3 feet apart. Anise prefers being grown in alkaline soil. Require consistent watering until they are established.
